Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission

Affidavit of S. Gulshan Singh son of Sunder Lal, aged 23 years, resident of Gurdwara Tikana Sahib, Punjabi Bagh, Delhi.

I do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1.                  That on 31-10-84, in our Gurdwara and in the nearby area no celebrations of any type was held rather all of us had condemned the cowardly murder of our beloved Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

2.                  That on 1-11-84, at about 9 AM, “Bhogh: ceremony was completed as usual. After some time we saw that a number of people were coming towards the Gurdwara through the park. They were about 300 / 400 in numbers. These people were carrying iron rods, lathies, pipes, kerosene oil tins. A tanker of oil was also coming behind them which stopped near our Gurdwara. Meanwhile, these 300 / 400 people entered the Gurdwara after breaking the door, which we had closed on seeing them coming towards us.

3.                  One white ambassador car came there and removed the gas cylinder. They directed the mob that remainder of the goods of the Gurdwara be looted first and later on burn it. A police jeep also came there in which an SI was sitting. He also repeated the same thing. Then another policeman came on the motorcycle fitted with wireless set. He also directed the mob as stated earlier. This mob damaged the Gurdwara extensively and afterwards proceeded towards Guru Nanak Public School, Punjabi Bagh. We were watching all this from the terrace of the Gurdwara.

4.                  The abovesaid people, who came in white Ambassador were clad in white Khadi clothes and were wearing badges, which are used for functions.

5.                  After some time two buses, two trucks and one matadoor arrived, they brought the matadoor inside the Gurdwara and loaded it with sugar bags, wheat bags, ghee tins. They also loaded 400 – 500 beds in one truck and cots in another truck. They took the locker itself as they could not break it. They took away all the utensils and four golden and five silver ‘Chour Sahib’. This entire mob had come in those vehicles and started burning the Gurdwaras. To save our lives when we jumped down and ran from the dispensary side, they followed us and we reached the police station to seek safety.

6.                  On reaching the police station, we found that the persons who had come in the white Ambassador car were present in the police station. They said sardars have come, kill them. Hearing this one head Constable started beating me at once, snatched my watch and Rs.400. At about 11 PM, myself and my companion S. Gurcharan Singh son of Mehtab Singh, resident of 27/41, Gurdwara Tikan Sahib, we ran away from the police station. We were afraid that we may be killed in the police station itself. We ran and reached our Gurdwara Tikana Sahib. And saw it burning and then we took protection in S. Avtar Singh Chug’s house.

7.                  That police never came to our Gurdwara for our help. The police came to help the mob and for their protection. Had the police not helped the mob, they could not loot and burn our Gurdwara. During the curfew we did not find any policemen came to help us or for the safety of the Gurdwara. The above episode, which I have narrated was also undergone by my companion Gurcharan Singh, aged 28 years. He was also beaten by the Head Constable and deprived of Rs.130 and a watch.
