Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission

Affidavit of Smt. Gurmeet W/o Sh. Balwinder Singh, r/o Farm No.2, Paparavat Road, New Roshanpura, Najafgarh, at present resident of C-115C, Tilak Vihar, New Delhi.

I, Gurmeet Kaur, the above named deponent, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: -

1.                  On 1-11-1984, at about 11:00 AM, about 250 – 300 people came and set the Gurdwara on fire and came to our farm. Behind the crowd came a police jeep. We all were in the house at that time. In that jeep were Thanedar – Hawa Singh and ASI Ram Chander and two Sepoys. Hawa Singh stopped the jeep. He disembarked Ram Chander and two constables near our house and took the jeep away after instructing the police, “Sub Sardaro Ko Under Bund Rakho. Main Badih Gadee Lay Kar Aata Hun. Aur Unko Le Jainge.” (Keep all Sardars locked inside. I will bring the big vehicle and will take all of them away). After that the police kept us confined inside for 1 ½ hour and gave us water too inside only. About 1 PM a crowd of about one thousand persons came again. It demolished our boundary wall and set all the doors on fire with petrol. We were all inside. The fire was about to reach us when we jumped and came out.

As we came out, we saw that in the persons indulging in arson was Harish Pandit who is a DTC driver and is our neighbour. Baldev Raj Sharma who stays in Kumpura was also in the arsonists – I recognize him.

As we came outside the house, the crowd started beating my husband. He went to CRP Camp. He was accompanied by Harbans. These both shaved off their hair and beards. At mid-night Balvinder my husband and Harbans – both were pushed out of the camp. As they came out of the camp – the crowd again attacked them. Balvinder was hit on the head and legs with iron rods. Harbans, in the confusion ran away and stayed hidden in the village for three days. After three days he told that we both (Balvinder and he) were coming from the camp and the crowd had killed Balvinder. Harbans is our neighbour and he recognizes a number of persons present in the crowd. He informed me that if he is called, he would state the same.
