Affidavit of Shri Sampuran Singh Chambal S/o S. Piyara Singh, aged 33 yrs., R/o WZ-211D, Street No.16, Sadh Nagar, Palam Colony, New Delhi-110045. I, Sampuran Singh Chambal, the above named deponent, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: - 1. That I say that I was on duty on 31-10-84, from 3 P.M. to 11 P.M., at Palam Airport where I A.M. working with the Air India Medical Department, as a Chief Pharmacist. After finishing my duty at 11 m on 31-10-84, I was on the way to my home on my scooter when I saw few persons sitting at the Rations shop, which is run by Pt. Harkesh and his son who belong to Congress party. I slowed down my scooter and saw that they were holding a meeting and discussing something in a serious mood and pointing towards me with the remarks that “these are the people who had killed Mrs. Gandhi.” I saw the following persons sitting on bench and some others whom I did not recognize, standing there: - 1) Pt. Harkesh, his wife and son, Suresh. 2) Balwan Khokkar 3) Shyam Lal 4) Rattan Lal After going a few yards away, I asked a lady who lived in my neighbourhood as to what was going on there. She informed me that they were planning to cause some damage to the Sikhs’ properties and she advised me to go home. I went inside my house and slept at 12 O’clock at midnight after bolting the doors of my rooms. 2. On that morning of 1st November `84, at about 8:30 A.M., I got up, I saw some smoke in the sky. Some Hindus were standing on the roofs of their houses. On inquiry, I came to know that the Singh Sabha Gurdwara of Sadh Nagar had been burnt down and a mob was coming to the market to burn the Sikhs’ shops. In no time a mob comprising of about 300 / 400 persons reached the market and set a bakery shop belonging to a Sikh on fire. Five members of that family of Sikhs were dragged out, beaten and burnt alive on the road in front of our shop. Our neighbours advised me to leave the house and run away but I requested them to give me shelter in their houses for some time in the hope that the police would come to our rescue and we would be protected from the mob. To our dismay, no police party turned up for three days. 3. Ultimately, the military reached on 3rd November`84, in the evening and we were removed to Gurdwara Sadar Bazar, Delhi Cantt. While we were hiding ourselves in our Hindu neighbour on 1st November`84, we saw that our house had been looted, damaged and set on fire by the mob, which was being led by Mr. Balwan Khokkar (Congress (I) leader) on motorcycle. The mob was carrying lathis, iron rods and other lethal weapons alongwith cans containing kerosene oil and probably petrol or some burning powder. Some of the following persons had been recognized by my mother and wife who were at that time standing in front of the house of one of our neighbours. Those persons are still residing in the same locality and were the same persons who were seen by me hatching some conspiracy to harm the Sikhs and their properties: 1) Pt. Harkesh, his wife and son, Suresh 2) Balwan Khokkar 3) Shyam Lal 4) Rattan Lal During our stay at the camp of Gurdwara Sadar Bazar, Delhi Cantt. we lodged a complaint dated 9-11-84 with the SHO, P.S. Delhi Cantt, a photocopy of which complaint is annexed herewith and marked as Annexure – A. The loss suffered by me as a result of looting of my house and its burning, is estimated at Rs.1,50,000/- approximately. |
