Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission

I, Raj Kumar, aged 32 years, son of Banwari Lal, resident of RZ-258, B-25, Rajan Nagar, Palam Colony, Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and state on oath as under: -

1.                  I am staying together with my family in the above residence for the last three years. I sell house construction material. I open my shop daily at 6:30 AM.

2.                  On 1-11-84 also, I left the house at 6:30. Due to the death of dear Prime Minister the market was closed – so I also did not open the shop and returned towards my residence. When I reached Palam Railway main road, I saw a jeep coming from the front. It was followed by scooterists, motorcyclists and persons on foot. When the jeep arrived near me, I saw that next to the driver was sitting Shri Sajjan Kumar. Sh. Sajjan Kumar had come to our colony many a times that is why I recognize him very well. The persons following the jeep told me that a meeting was to be held that day in Mangolpuri and J.J. Colony and Sajjan Kumar will address the meeting. I also started following the jeep. When I reached – the meeting had already started and Sajjan Kumar was speaking. Because there was no loud-speaker, I could not hear hat he was saying but the mob was shouting slogans “Indira Gandhi Amar Rahey, Sardaroo Ko Mar Do. Indira Gandhi Hamari Ma Hai – Aur Inihoo Ne Ushey Mara Hai.”

3.                  When I returned home, the time was past 8:30. After tea and breakfast, I went to Rao Sahib’s residence – which is near the Gurdwara. I was still there when at about 0930 lot of noise was heard outside. Then I saw that a huge mob which was carrying iron rods, lathis etc. was advancing towards the Gurdwara and was shouting the slogans “kill the Sardars,” (Sardaro Ko Maroo). The mob went straight to the Gurdwara. At time only ‘Granthi’ was inside the Gurdwara. The crowd hit him with lathis and he fell there. Thereafter, he somehow escaped. The mob sprinkled the kerosene oil in the Gurdwara and set it on fire, and the mob brought the holy “Guru Granth Sahib” outside, tore that and then burnt the same.

4.                  After burning the Gurdwara, the mob burnt the house of Jasbir Singh. After that I saw that Harbans’s truck No.872 was set on fire. I returned to my residence. Afternoon at about 2:00 PM, the mob attacked our house. In my house, the owner’s younger brother Trilochan Singh was staying. From the mob, Naresh, Pahwa, Halwai and his son dragged Trilochan outside and hit him with lathis and iron rods and he fell there. When I went to save him, then these people hit me with lathis and I retreated. After that the mob burnt Trilochan Singh alive.

5.                  After that my house was burnt. I suffered a loss of Rs.50,000/-.
