Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission

I, Kartar Singh, aged 63 years, S/o S. Tehl Singh, r/o No.WZ-227/D-204, Sadh Nagar, Palam Colony, Gali No.16, New Delhi-110045, solemnly affirm and declare as under: -

1.                  On 1-11-84, while we were taking our breakfast, our neighbour,  a Mohammedan lady told us that Sikhs were being killed and their shops looted and burnt on Pakkha Road, Delhi. Without giving much attention to this, I went to my shop situated nearby. As I opened our one of the two shops, I saw mob coming from the main road. So, I ran towards backside of my shop.

2.                  The shop which was a “bakery”, which I left like that, I had just opened, I saw from the backside that the mob consisting of 400 – 500 was having iron rods, sticks and white powder which on throwing caught fire. The mob, first of all broke the shutter of my furniture shop. The shop was in the route of the mob.

3.                  One person namely Munshi, who was a peon in the Primary School and owned 5 – 6 shops in Palam Colony and is a Congress-I worker, and who at the time of the elections used to come to our houses to seek our votes and one Dr. Sharma were loading the mob. Doctor announced that the shop belonged to the Sardar owning telephone. So, note down the number of this shop.

4.                  After hearing this from the doctor, I ran from the scene and reached my house. I immediately advised my sons to take shelter somewhere and I myself after half an hour ran to a neighbour who is a Hindu and lives behind us for protection from the ventilator of the 2nd floor, I saw that two boys who had come with the mob, had climbed on the roof of the house and were shouting, “Sardaro Bahar Niklo” (Sardars – come out). One of the boys was Omi S/o Chhote Lal working in Indian Airlines, the other one is named Partap who lives at a little distance from my house. Partap had white powder with him with which he set our house on fire. The loss due to burning of shop and house is about 2 ½ lakhs.

5.                  In the evening, I hide myself in the “tanky” of a neighbour’s house under construction till 3-11-1984 when Army came and took me out. When I opened my house alongwith Military, the smoke and heat affected my right eye, which is still not heeled.
