On 1st November, 1984, at about 8:45 am, I went to serve tea to my father-in-law S. Moti Singh who resided in B-2. I saw that a meeting was being held in B-2 Park. About 150/200 persons of our mohallas had gathered there. Four females and rest were males. Shri Sajjan Kumar was delivering a lecture and the listeners were Brahmanand Gupta, Tailwala (Oil merchant) Congress –I Pradhan of A/4 and his in A/4, owner of Satbir Hotel of A/4, three brothers of Brahmanand Gupta, Hari Om Ganpat, Jai Bhagwan, Peeria who sell charas and ganja and stays opposite our house, brother of Peeria – Mangala, Chauhan Purbia, Nathu Pradhan of A/4, Bhangi’s son and his son-in-law, Ramesh of B/2 who is Nathu Pradhan’s nephew, Jai Kishan who used to sit in D-7 in Sajjan Kumar’s office, Kamal Patangwala, who stays in the park of A/3, Master (Tailor), his two son-in-laws and his son who stays in A/3, Omi Tempowala, Narain vegetable seller of A/5, Ganga Ram Doctor, Changa Ram Doctor and his younger wife, Rammu who empties cement bags and stays B/2, Sohan Lal of A/3, Asla Ram Gujrati who stays in A/4. Sajjan Kumar was speaking standing on a plank. Everybody was standing. He was wearing white kurta pyajama of Khadder. The park was half enclosed by kanats. Sajjan Kumar was lecturing, “Sardaro Ko Mar Do, Loot Lo, Jalla Do.” He stayed there for about ½ hour and went away. On reaching home, I told all this to Sardar Ji. He also became frightened. We closed our shutters and sat down. 2. On 1st November 84 at about 1500, the Gurdwara was set on fire. We all of our ‘baradri’ (community) came out of our houses. Asla Ram Gujrati, Peeria and Nathu Pradhan broke the Nishan Sahib and sweepers (Jamadars) had lit the fire and were standing outside. They had brought the oil drum into the street. Brahma Nand Gupta and his three brothers had brought the oil drum. At that time SHO Bhatia of Sultanpuri, Jai Chand Hawaldar, Rajinder Sepoy, Sukhbir Thanedar – these all said, “you all Sardars go to your houses – otherwise I will open fire.” We went to our houses. The doors of my house were closed from outside. Bhatti and Jai Chand closed the doors. Gun fire was heard from outside. Police was firing. The police was sitting on Sita’s house and firing. Then sitting on Brahmanand’s house, Ughal and Islam fired which hit the house of Gudoli Kaur This went on whole night. At about 2 am in the night, the rear wall of our house was being broken. Behind our house is the house of the owner of Satvir Hotel. He was trying to enter from the rear. He set my house on fire. I even pleaded with folded hands. Brahmanand and his three brothers poured oil into my house and set it on fire. Ugjal was firing from top. When the fire spread, then my Sardar and my two sons tried to run away. My Sardar was hit by a bullet whilst he was trying to jump over the small wall. SHO Bhatti was firing from the front from the road. My sons were hit by bullets. My Sardar, inspite of being hit by a bullet ran towards the house of Kehar Singh. My sons though hit by bullets, were gasping. Then at about 7 – 8 AM on 2nd November, 1984, they came and dragged my sons to a place near Satbir’s house. They were burnt with kerosene. When I ran towards my sons, Nathu Pradhan, Gupta Brahmanand and Ramesh stripped me and raped me. They made me run naked on the road. Nobody from my street gave me a ‘Dupatta’. I went to A/2 to my elder sister. I stayed the night there. The military arrived on 3rd November and evacuated all of us. From there I came to Barat Ghar next to Sultanpuri Police Station. From there we came to Rani Bagh School, Shakurpur refugee camp – where I found my children.
