Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission

                     I, Madan Singh Chawla S/o S. Bhagwan Singh Chawla, R/o 2 –2/4213, Lajpat Nagar- II, New Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: - 

1.                  That on the morning of 1st November 1984, some tempo loads of people were shouting slogans against the Sikh community and also shouting ‘Indira Gandhi Zindabad’ etc.

2.                  That at about 10:30 A.M. on 1st November 1984, many people gathered on the road in front of our house. In a short time the mob swelled to many hundred and they started looting the Sikh shops in the Central Market and around the market. Our house is situated quite in front of the Central Market.

3.                  That the mob was carrying iron rods, lathis and other lethal weapons. They were carrying tins of kerosene oil and some powder in their bags.

4.                  That at about 11 A.M. the rioters started breaking the shutter of my brother’s shop which is below our house. The mob was continuously shouting slogans against the Sikhs. They were saying “Kill the Sikhs, Khoon Ka Badla Khoon.”

5.                  That after looting the shop of my brother the mob set it on fire. We all are residing on the 1st floor. When mob started breaking the shutter and throwing stones at our house, I rang up the police control room and local police station, Lajpat Nagar for police help but no help reached. Six or seven police constables were standing quite near our house. From the 1st floor of our house I requested the policemen to come to our help but they paid deaf ear to my request.

6.                  That some DTC buses and trucks of MCD come there and dropped many people there and they started looting and burning.

7.                  That when the fire got fully ablaze and reached the first floor of our house, some good Hindu neighbours came to our rescue. They took us down stairs and gave us shelter in their house.

8.                  That the house of my brother was fully burnt. Inspite of making many telephone calls to police station and fire brigade and control room also no help reached and the house and all the belongings burnt to ashes.

9.                  That my portion of house was looted by the mob after our neighbours took us into their house.

10.             That the police did not help but our Hindu neighbours went to fire brigade and also tried their best to put off the fire but fire was so big that they were helpless. One fire brigade van reached at the site after about four hours of the fire. Till that time all the house were gone to ashes.

11.             That in the evening of the same day when I was collecting some goods of my house which were thrown on the road by the rioters, a group of young boys of a nearby mohalla came and attacked me by iron rod, lathis – sticks and other such things. I suffered many injuries.

12.             That my shop M/s Chawla Auto Sales, 35, Prithi Raj Mkt. was also looted by the rioters on the 1st and 2nd November 1984, for which I have registered an FIR at the area Police Station for my house loss and filed the FIR at P.S. Lajpat Nagar also.
