I, Kuldip Singh Rekhi S/o late Shri Rawel Singh R/o G-16, East of Kailash, New Delhi, Proprietor Rekhi Tent House, Lajpat Nagar, and the President of Gurdwara Sri Guru Nanak Sat Sang Sabha, Lajpat Nagar-IV, New Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under:- On November 1, 1984, we were told that some miscreants had broken the window panes of Gurdwara Amar Colony at about 12 noon. I alongwith S. Surjit Singh Bajwa and some other members of the Sabha went there and saw that the mob had moved to Gurdwara Dayanand Colony after smashing the glasses of windows etc. On the enquiry from the people we came to know that the mob had assembled behind the house of Mr. Des Raj Chhabra, the Metropolitan Councilor and had moved from there to Gurdwara Amar Colony. In the meantime same persons came running and told us that the mob had burnt Gurdwara Dayanand Colony. I alongwith 13 or 14 persons reached Gurdwara Dayanand Colony and saw the same burning at about 12.45 PM. There was a mob consisting of about one thousand persons with lathis, iron rods and kerosene oil tins. They started stoning at us and at that time the mob was also shouting slogans “Kill the Sikhs and Burn them”. During this process three tempos loaded with persons carrying sariyas, lathis and kerosene oil thins came from Sapna Cinema side, they got down near Gurdwara and started stoning from our back, we were in front of the Gurdwara. We saw three policemen, one with revolver and two with guns, standing near the Gurdwara, but the police personnel did not save us. On the contrary they were laughing. When we thought that we were not safe we moved into one house behind the Gurdwara. After waiting for 10 to 15 minutes, the mob came at the back side of Gurdwara and started stoning the houses. The houses stoned belonged to Hindus. The home owner came out and began chasing the mob. The mob asked Hindus to identify Sikh houses but Hindus refused and asked the mob to leave that place. Then the mob moved towards Gurdwara Amar Colony. After about one hour, when we reached Gurdwara Amar Colony, we saw the whole Gurdwara burning including Granthies and Sewadars quarters. We phoned to SHO, Lajpat Nagar and Fire Brigade but to no avail. Then we went to Police Station Lajpat Nagar to lodge a report but the SHO refused to register FIR and told us that he is taking steps. Then the Hindus and Sikhs of the locality made Peace Committees and guarded the locality day and night jointly and did not allow the mob to enter the locality again. In the evening at about 6 PM there was another mob which attacked from Jamrudpur Village side but the local Hindus and Sikhs blocked the entrance to locality and did not allow them to proceed further. They started stoning us but we resisted the mob for about one hour. The police came and asked the member of the Peace Committee to go to their home. When Peace Committee members asked why police was not asking the mob to go away as they are not local residents, police again repeated that curfew is imposed, we should go to our home otherwise they may open fire. When some Hindu members of peace Committee came forward and asked the police to open fire if they want, police personnel went away. |
