Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission

AFFIDAVIT OF SHRI ARJIT SINGH S/O S. WAZIR SINGH, AGED 48 YEARS R/O B-1/2, SAFDARJUNG ENCLAVE, NEW DELHI.

I, Ajit Singh, the above named deponent do hereby solemnly affirm and state on oath as under:-

1.                  That I say that on 31.10.1984 at about 11 AM I was in INA Market where I came to know about the assassination of our Prime Minister.  After some time, I proceeded towards All India Institute of Medical Sciences for making inquiries about my admission in the hospital regarding operation of Harrenea.  From Ring Road side I saw a huge crowd standing in front of All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences.  I tried to enter the gate of the hospital from Ring Road side but I could not because the police were not allowing the people to enter the hospital.  Then I went to my house at 11.30 AM when I came to know about the death of our Prime Minister from my wife,  who was told by the next door neighbourer who is a journalist.  I remained indoors.  In the evening at about 7 PM certain buses were stopped on the road by a mob of about 15/20 people who were pulling out the Sardars from the buses and removing their turbans and assaulting them with wooden sticks which they were carrying in their hands.  At about 6.30 PM I saw the Baljit Guest House burning, which is about 50 yards from my house.

2.                  On 1.11.1984 from 9 AM onwards I kept observing the mob roaming about and passed away in front of my house 3/4  times.  The mob comprised of about 300/400 people,. Most of them were carrying iron rods of uniform size and thickness.  I constantly tried to contact the Police Station, Vinay Nagar and also Fire Station and I was told that they were not allowed to move out.  On the same day at about 1.30 PM the mob collected in front of our house and one of them pointed towards my house and the mob started pelting the stones.  At that time, two policemen were standing near our house.  At that time I was standing inside the Drawing Room in the first floor of my house and witnessing all this through the closed window panes.  I alongwith my family escaped through the back door of my house and went to the house of our neighbour.

3.                  While we were in the house of our neighbourer we were informed by our neighbourer with whom we had taken shelter, that the mob had started looting our house and after some time, they burnt our house.

4.                  I have suffered a loss of about Rs.6 lakhs.
